Camping or coding? How kids will spend their school holidays
Kids are falling into different camps these school holidays: the kind with tents and torches, and the kind with computers and coding.
While plenty of families are heading to the bush for a break, coding classes are increasingly popular. Hundreds of children as young as six will spend their holidays camped in front of a screen, creating games, apps and interactive stories.
Grigory Punanov and his wife Elena Sveshnikova taught kids coding as a hobby but strong demand transformed their classes into a small business. All 200 places at their Sydney Programming School's Code4Fun workshops these holidays are full.
Mr Punanov said coding helped foster children's logical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as their imaginations. "It really boosts children's creativity because programming is quite abstract and before you program something, you need to imagine what you are building."
The holiday program caters to children in years 1 to 5, and is almost as popular with girls as boys. The Stanley children – twins Madison and Fletcher, 9, and twins Ben and Archie, 8 – have all attended holiday workshops as well as weekly classes.
Their mother, Thea, agrees with Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg that "all the jobs of the future are going to rely on coding".
"They have heaps of fun and they are learning, understanding how things work," she said. "When they do it in class they work together; it's not like it's an antisocial activity. It's good for them."
When Ben Levi ran his first Code Camp in December 2013, there were eight students. These holidays more than 900 children from kindergarten to Year 9 will attend camps in Sydney and Melbourne, building their own websites and apps.
Mr Levi said some parents had concerns about too much screen time "but with Code Camp they are creating something, rather than just being an observer". He said there was "a lot of talk, especially with Malcolm Turnbull as Prime Minister, about innovation, the ideas boom", and coding taught valuable skills.
But for the Greenep-Bond family, with teenaged children Zed and Kestra, getting away from technology is part of the attraction of camping. These holidays they will pitch their tent at Green Patch in Jervis Bay.
"It's a chance to get away from the screens, sitting in different rooms, and basically hang out together," Vanessa Bond said. "There's no electricity, so once the batteries die out on the phone, that's it. At 8.30 the kids are in the tent playing cards under the gas light. You go to bed early and wake up super early. And food always tastes better eaten outdoors."
Ms Bond said Green Patch was a peaceful place to be. "The water is always warm, you're guaranteed to see dolphins, there's lots of birdlife, the kangaroos come right up to you in the campsite."
Her daughter Kestra, 14, said camping refreshed her. "I love fishing off the rocks and going to the beach and playing soccer on the beach with my family."
Lloyd Godson, co-founder of the Nature School at Port Macquarie, said parents were looking for ways to get their kids engaged without technology. The school's holiday program, giving children aged 3 to 12 the chance to explore the outdoors and learn bush craft, is booked out.
Mr Godson said when children connected with the natural world, it built their confidence and gave them a different perspective. "Kids are born problem solvers and creators," he said. "It's just a matter of cultivating that, giving them an opportunity to just be themselves and roam free."
